What Makes a Dispensary Good?
Written by Morgan on April 4th 2020
A while back I got my medical marijuana card in the state fo Florida. Stay tuned for an article about the process off getting a card in Florida. This article is about the experience at the dispensary.

Dispensaries can vary just as much as any other service industry. State laws, organizational culture, managers, owners and staff all play their role in what gets delivered to the customer.

This article discusses my dispensary experience and that of family and friends in different parts of the country. I've come up with four main factors that dictate the quality of the customer experience.

Product Quality

The most obvious issue that people are concerned about in the quality of what you're buying. I've been to multiple dispensaries in Florida. It would surprise people how much the quality of products can vary between dispensaries.

Some people are after different levels of quality. I've walked into dispensaries that clearly target the higher quality consumer, with the price to go with it. Other dispensaries have cheaper price tags, with a degree of quality that matches.

In my opinion, there is a place for all qualities off marijuana products just as there is a place for each type of quality of beer. It comes down to what the producer is trying to deliver and what the customer wants.

Product Consistency

Once you decide what you want, your want it to be available. I've never had to worry about Publix being out of my favorite spaghetti sauce. I hadn't realized how much I had taken this for granted until getting my medical card.

As far as consistent product availability, MM is still on the frontier. I've found that many of the products that I want are available one week and then gone the next. From talking to dispensary staff, this is common place. Even the best of dispensaries  face this problem.

Why? I can only speculate at this time. I would guess that the suppliers and the dispensaries are still figuring everything out. In addition, consistent supply costs money. Walmart has a large and expensive process to manage product supply. We can't all be Walmart. As the industry evolves, I'm sure that this issue will be long forgotten.

The Ease of the Process

As regulated as the marijuana industry is, it can be a challenge to keep a dispensary from turning into a glorified department of motor vehicles. The customer has to walk in with the proper documentation, otherwise they go home. The waiting area is often crowded. The dispensary has to provide goods that are within the parameters of the patients prescription.

I personally like to make online orders that I pick up at the dispensary. However, some places do not allow you to modify the order once you talk to the staff. For example, let's say you complete an online order for a gram of flour and two tinctures. Once you walk into the store, you cannot suddenly decide that you want a vape pen also.

The ease of the process can vary based on the state laws. For example, Florida allows home deliver while Ohio does not. Same thing with online ordering. Even online orders will involve waiting. I've never been able to be in and out of a store in under 10 minutes.

What can I say? The laws are there and we all have to work with them. Like many people, I predict that the laws will ease up over time until you have a legalized model similar to alcohol.

Service

If you ever run into a rude bud tender, please post a comment about your experience. I've personally never been in a dispensary in which the staff isn't happy as can be. This is one piece of the experience that I find very consistent across the board.

Here's the best example I can think of. Four weeks ago I went to pick up an online order. As I mentioned, picking up an online order still requires waiting. While I waited, One of the bud tenders stood in front of the crowd of patients and read one liner jokes regarding weed:

Q: What do you call a pothead with two spliffs?
A: Double jointed.

FYI, here's a good website if your looking for good weed one liners: CLICK HERE

Best Dispensaries

My choices of "best dispensaries" are based on a combination of the four factors I've mentioned. My experience is limited to both Florida and Ohio.

For Florida, my pick is Trulieve. Trulieve, in my opinion, has it all. There have an easy way to order online. They have a great selection of products. Like any other dispensary, sometimes they are out of what I want. However, I've always been able to get something else that I've been happy with.

Trulieve is the only Florida dispensary that I know of in Florida that allows you to bring back products that you are not happy with. I've never felt the need to do this, but it's nice to know that I have the option.

Ohio: Verdant Creations

I have family and friends that swear by Verdant Creations. Being a Florida resident, I'm unable to obtain an Ohio Medical Card. Some states have reciprocity. Unfortunately Ohio and Florida do not.

Verdant creations recently was considered the "best affordable dispensary" in Ohio According to City Beat; a renowned online news resource based out of Cincinnati. The rationale for their success os largely based on the four factors mentioned in this article. Click here to read the article.

Conclusion

The marijuana industry has been around for a few years now. I think that in the years to come it will evolve a great deal as laws change and dispensaries become more creative in how to best serve their customers.
