CBD Production
Written by Morgan on January 16th 2021
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a compound that has shown great potential in medicine and health. A major benefit to CBD is that, unlike marijuana, it contains small amounts of THC, which is the psychoactive component that makes the user high. This makes CBD sound more appealing than it’s relative, marijuana.

How CBD is Extracted from Cannabis
One of the most popular ways to extract CBD from hemp is Apeks CO2. It uses CO2 as a catalyst to extract the oil from the plant. This is considered one of the most clean way of extraction; avoiding the residue involved in other methods.

Once the oil is extracted, if is effectively crude oil. The next step is to remove as much undesirable elements from the CBD. This is called Winterization. There are many things that can be found in newly extracted oil, many of which you don’t want in the final product (lipids, waxes, fats).

Once the oil is extracted, the compound is combined with 200 proof alcohol. After a thorough mixing process, it is placed in freezing temperature over night. The next day the compound is ready do be filtered. This can be done via a filter paper through an extraction jar. After filtering, the alcohol is removed. This is done with simple heat. Through heating the compound, the alcohol evaporates due to the boiling point of alcohol is lower than the oil.

The next step is called short path distillation. This is basically further removing of undesired elements by mixing it with other compounds with lower boiling points than the oil.

Other important factors regarding how to extract oil from cannabis is the equipment in question. The equipment should be meant for food and consistently cleaned. Stainless steel equipment is ideal to prevent corrosion. The facilities also must be capable of handling the high and low temperatures demanded of the process. Ventilation is vital, as well as alarm systems to monitor problems immediately.

Conclusion
Many people argue that the safety of the product has little to do with the plant itself. Rather, it comes down to the equipment. Other issues facing the industry are a lack of universal standards. The FDA has yet to determine how to handle CBD, so long as it’s (A.) not marketed as a drug and (B.) has THC levels lower than 0.3%. Overtime, we can expect the FDA to have a position on how and what to use CBD for. For now, It is important to be aware of the production process of the products we buy; especially with CBD.
