While there are literally thousands of ingredients, or cannabinoid, in cannabis products, the two that are most popular are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and (CBD).
CBD: This is the common ingredient in most legal cannabis products. Federally legal cannabis products are most often called CBD and have a THC level of less than .3%. While early research is promising regarding various therapeutic benefits to using CBD, you find that these products are not intoxicating.
THC: When you think of getting “high” on pot, the cannabinoid most responsible for this intoxicating feeling is THC. Any cannabis product that has more that 0.3% THC is considered illegal under federal law. That being said, we do have specific states that have passed laws that deviate from the federal law for multiple purposes.
Until recently, my viewpoint has been that these two cannabinoids are opposing ingredients. A person likely wants one or the other, seldom both. However, recalling my first Jack and Coke leads me to see CBD and THC as complimentary. We like salt on our food. We like sugar in our coffee, at least I do. Is it too far fetched to want our cannabis in the same manner.
It with this mindset that I introduce Ratio Products. These are products that have a specific and measurable mixture of CBD and THC. If you have purchased from any dispensary, you likely have seen these terms on certain products, “1:1, 8:1, 5:1” or more. You may have guessed by now that these numbers represent the ratio between the percentage of THC and CBD.
Specifically, the ratio is referring to the ratio of CBD to THC. That being said, the ratio we are discussing doesn’t mention the amount of these two cannabinoids. IF you go onto a dispensary website, you may find products that say this: “1:1 drops have 5 mg of CBD and 5 mg of THC per dose.” Be aware of this distinction should you decide to purchase Ratio Products.
