CBD and THC: Understanding Ratio Products
Written by Morgan on February 20th 2021
I’ve been involved in the cannabis industry for about two years. I’ve working in dispensaries and I’ve been a sales rep for CBD oil. I also have a medical card in the state of Florida.

I’ve witnessed many changes in my experience in this business. Much of the stigma of using marijuana, both recreationally and medically, is gone. Much of my preconceived notions about the people who use marijuana have been challenged. This is especially true when I see the good people that come into dispensaries. For these reasons I’m quite thankful for my experience in the business so far.

The other day I reflected back to my days in college. One night, after taking an exam, I was out with a friend and he ordered me a coke with Jack Daniels. Up to that point I was always drinking beer, so this was my first “cocktail.” I was amazed at the concept of mixing a liquor, which I would never drink by itself, with something else to add to flavor and take away the intensity. Long story short I enjoyed my Jack and Coke. FYI, this story is an analogy not an attempt to glorify drinking. This is simply an analogy for the subject of this article.

Ironically this story popped into my head as a result of my hearing more and more about “Ratio Products.”

What are Ratio Products?
While there are literally thousands of ingredients, or cannabinoid, in cannabis products, the two that are most popular are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and (CBD).

CBD: This is the common ingredient in most legal cannabis products. Federally legal cannabis products are most often called CBD and have a THC level of less than .3%. While early research is promising regarding various therapeutic benefits to using CBD, you find that these products are not intoxicating.

THC: When you think of getting “high” on pot, the cannabinoid most responsible for this intoxicating feeling is THC. Any cannabis product that has more that 0.3% THC is considered illegal under federal law. That being said, we do have specific states that have passed laws that deviate from the federal law for multiple purposes.

Until recently, my viewpoint has been that these two cannabinoids are opposing ingredients. A person likely wants one or the other, seldom both. However, recalling my first Jack and Coke leads me to see CBD and THC as complimentary. We like salt on our food. We like sugar in our coffee, at least I do. Is it too far fetched to want our cannabis in the same manner.

It with this mindset that I introduce Ratio Products. These are products that have a specific and measurable mixture of CBD and THC. If you have purchased from any dispensary, you likely have seen these terms on certain products, “1:1, 8:1, 5:1” or more. You may have guessed by now that these numbers represent the ratio between the percentage of THC and CBD.

Specifically, the ratio is referring to the ratio of CBD to THC. That being said, the ratio we are discussing doesn’t mention the amount of these two cannabinoids. IF you go onto a dispensary website, you may find products that say this: “1:1 drops have 5 mg of CBD and 5 mg of THC per dose.” Be aware of this distinction should you decide to purchase Ratio Products.

The Cocktail Effect
One of the common benefits that I keep hearing of regarding Ratio Products is that they bring about less anxiety in comparison to full THC products. Anxiety and paranoia are more likely to be seen among products with higher THC. CBD, as we’ve mentioned, tends to lower anxiety. Therefore, is it farfetched to think that a mixture can be beneficial?

My experience has been main in CBD based cannabis. One thing that has kept me away from typical marijuana is anxiety and paranoia.

The Various Ratios
1:1- believed to be good for pain alleviation. Out of all of the products mentioned in this article, 1:1 has the most potential for psychoactive and intoxicating effects.

2:1 thru 5:1- These products are more balanced than 1:1. Though psychoactive effects are possible, the higher percentage of CBD makes those effects less intrusive.

10:1 thru 20:1- Low likelihood of being intoxicating. Optimal for inflammation.

Conclusion
Have you tried any Ratio Products? Let a comment about your experiences or opinions.
