Interview with a Physicians Assistant about the Corona Virus
Written by Morgan on March 19th 2020

Allison Onkala PA-C (Physician Assistant)

Alison has been a physicians assistant for 6 years. Recently I had the change to ask her some questions about the Corona Virus.
Can you state your name and your job title?

Allison Onkala PA-C (Physician Assistant)

M: Where do you work?

A: I work in both primary and urgent care in North Central Florida.

M: How has your work changed over the last few weeks?

A lot has quickly changed quickly given the current COVID-19 pandemic. We are screening patients ahead of clinic visits to limit exposures to staff and other patients at the clinic. We are also seeing patients outside). We are also doing telemedicine visits with patients to reduce transmission.

Patients with respiratory symptoms who come to the clinic are being met with signs telling them not to enter the clinic. Providers are assessing from a distance and then determining whether we need to wear gown/mask/eyewear/gloves while further assessing the patient outside of the clinic. Again, this is to reduce possible transmission. Testing is in short supply, we have 5 tests available at this time at my primary care office, so they must be used sparingly.

Your clinic is treating patients outside. Makes sense, but what exactly is the benefit of doing this?

Outside consultations cuts down on transmissions. There are less surfaces touched by patient who may be carrying COVID-19. Less respiratory droplets as well. Less risk to other patients and staff.
How is the mood in your facility, is there anxiety?

I think we are all anxious right now. Even healthy people should be worried about COVID-19. Providing accurate information on COVID-19 to patients is one of the most important things I think we are doing; connecting with patients in general is critical for medical providers/staff. We are also encouraging patients to take care of themselves. This means eat healthy, exercise, get enough rest, wash hands and take a break from media coverage.

What should people be doing to prepare for the months ahead?

The biggest thing is stay at home (only go out for necessary things if possible, ie groceries, medical appointment, etc) especially if you are sick. Do not go to the ER unless you have severe symptoms. Prepare but dont panic: make sure you have your routine medications, wash your hands often (soapy water is preferred to hand sanitizer), eat healthy, exercise, take care of your emotional health.

What kind of medicine/medical supplies should I stock up on?

I think the biggest thing people should have on hands is their every day medications, also items like baby formula if necessary. Also, a working thermometer, Tylenol, cough/cold medicines, tissues. Personally I think there is too much unnecessary panic around things like toilet paper in my opinion. This only puts pressure on the entire system. Masks are in short supply and thus hard to find at this time. They may help but there are other ways to contract COVID-19 in addition to respiratory droplets, meaning from contaminated objects and surfaces.
